Buyers now ask AI tools for vendor shortlists, and most B2B brands have no idea what those tools say about them. Some are named. Many are not. A few are described wrongly.
There is no perfect metric yet. But you can measure AI search visibility in a way that is repeatable, honest and useful for decisions. Here is the method we use.
- Pick 20 to 30 buyer questions and keep them fixed.
- Ask each AI tool the same questions every month and record who is named and which sources are cited.
- Track your mention rate, accuracy and cited sources, not a single score.
- Combine it with AI referral traffic from analytics and Search Console.
Why AI visibility is hard to measure
- Answers change with wording, user location, history and the day.
- Different tools use different sources.
- Most AI influence never shows up as a tagged visit.
This means a single AI visibility score is misleading. What works is a fixed question set, checked the same way at a regular interval, so you can see direction rather than chase noise.
Step 1: Build your question set
Write 20 to 30 questions your buyers would really ask. Mix four types.
| Type | Example for an HR software firm |
|---|---|
| Category | Best HR software for a 200-person company |
| Problem | How do I automate employee onboarding |
| Comparison | HR software that integrates with Slack and payroll |
| Brand | What is [your brand] and who is it for |
Do not change the questions every month. Add new ones in a separate tab so your trend line stays comparable.
Step 2: Run the check the same way each time
- Use the same tools every time, for example ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews.
- Use a logged-out or clean session where you can, and note the location.
- Record the full answer, not just whether you appeared.
- Run it monthly. Weekly checks mostly measure noise.
Step 3: Record what matters
| Field | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Brand named? (yes or no) | Your basic mention rate |
| Position in the answer | First mention carries more weight than a footnote |
| Accurate description? | Wrong facts cost you more than no mention |
| Competitors named | Who wins the question instead of you |
| Sources cited | Which pages and sites the tool relied on |
The cited sources are the most useful field. They show which pages and third-party sites shape the answer, which tells you where to improve content, listings or reviews.
We will test your buyers’ questions across the main AI tools and show you who gets named, and why.
Step 4: Add the hard data
Combine your manual checks with data you already have. Google reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, per Google’s guide to AI features and your website. Google also announced generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026. In GA4, check referral sessions from AI tool domains.
Many AI-influenced visits arrive as direct or branded search. Low AI referral numbers do not mean AI has no influence.
Step 5: Turn findings into actions
- Not named at all: create or strengthen the page that answers that question directly.
- Named but described wrongly: fix inconsistent facts across your site, LinkedIn and directories.
- Competitors cited from review sites: earn reviews and listings in the same places.
- Check that AI crawlers can reach your site. ChatGPT search relies on OAI-SearchBot, separate from GPTBot, per OpenAI’s crawler documentation.

What is AI search visibility?
How often and how accurately AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google’s AI features mention your brand when buyers ask relevant questions.
Is there a tool that measures AI visibility automatically?
Several tools sample AI answers at scale. They help with volume, but you should still review a fixed set of questions by hand to judge accuracy.
How often should we check AI visibility?
Monthly is enough for most B2B brands. Answers vary day to day, so frequent checks mostly measure noise.
Do we need special markup to appear in Google’s AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Clear, helpful pages matter most.
Should we block AI crawlers?
It is a business decision. Blocking search crawlers like OAI-SearchBot can keep you out of ChatGPT search results. Training crawlers like GPTBot are controlled separately.
Can we pay to appear in AI answers?
Not in organic AI answers. Visibility comes from clear pages, consistent facts and credible sources that mention you.
